Food for thought: Gothel (Tangled) and Medusa (Uprising)

I was watching Disney’s Tangled for the first time, and it seemed like every moment the character Mother Gothel was on-screen, her design really reminded me of Medusa from Kid Icarus: Uprising.

 

Comparing the two side-by-side now, they don’t heavily resemble each other… aside for facial features and queenly attitude. However, it’s interesting to note that in a prototype video of Uprising, Medusa’s design, being radically different from the final product, has hair that looks remarkably similar to Gothel’s (though everything being silhouetted, it’s hard to tell):

Undoubtedly it must be a coincidence seeing as Tangled was first released in November of 2010, long after Uprising’s debut trailer was shown at e3—though I don’t know, it’s possible that if imagery of Mother Gothel’s character was released early enough, it could be the designers saw and took inspiration from it… I’m kind of thinking more that Medusa’s beta hair design was probably more inspired by her Kid Icarus artwork than anything else (and it’s not like that particular hair style is unique, of course):

Still, it makes me wonder exactly who and what the designers pulled inspiration from regarding Medusa’s Uprising design (aside for the obvious choices)… Any thoughts? c:
